MEGTRON 8 PCB: When Lower Loss Helps the Channel
MEGTRON 8 PCB material can be considered when dielectric loss is a meaningful part of a demanding channel budget. The practical question is how much useful margin the complete construction gains, and what changes are required to build and verify it.
This is the family selection page. The R-5795(N) guide and R-5795(U) guide keep their distinct glass constructions and design tasks separate. Use the Panasonic hub for the surrounding material portfolio.

Identify the bottleneck before specifying a premium grade
Review whether routing loss, a discontinuity, crosstalk, skew or another constraint controls the design. A lower dielectric loss can help the routing term without fixing the other problems. Material escalation should follow a stated engineering need.
Panasonic introduced MEGTRON 8 for demanding networking applications. Those application examples are useful context, not a promise that every PCB using the family supports a particular bitrate. Keep the actual interface specification and channel topology with the selection record.
Construction decisions at a glance
| Review focus | Established context | Design boundary |
|---|---|---|
| N construction | Low-Dk glass | Own source and model. |
| U construction | Ultra-low-Df glass | Not a combined N/U best-case grade. |
| Commercial | Common scope and quantity | No built-in price data. |
Separate the N and U construction choices
The manufacturer distinguishes low-Dk glass and ultra-low-Df glass variants. They should not be collapsed into one combined best-case property set. Preserve the exact core and prepreg names, copper profile, resin content and specimen conditions when evaluating data.
The current global table and older regional sheets can report different frequencies or rounding. Choose a controlled reference for the build rather than averaging the published values. Ask for the applicable construction table when the intended thickness differs from the characterization sample.
| Review item | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Driver | Identify the limiting channel mechanism |
| Variant | N and U glass remain separate |
| Comparison | Complete loss at matched geometry and frequency |
| Boundary | No guaranteed percentage improvement or current price |

Use the current inputs and keep the assumptions
Start with the example only to inspect the units and the calculation boundary. Replace every assumption with a value tied to your own document or measurement. An empty numeric field is not zero. The review-reference field is a local label; avoid entering customer names, confidential part numbers or other private information into a public worksheet.
After calculating, read the notes alongside the numerical result. Changing any input invalidates the displayed result and disables its download until you calculate again. For a comparison, keep the units, geometry, material condition and measurement boundary consistent. A long decimal result does not imply equally precise input data. The downloadable record stays on your device and can be attached manually to an inquiry. It is not automatically transferred into the Contact form.
If an input is unknown, identify the person or document needed to resolve it. Do not fill a gap with a favorable generic value simply to obtain a result. You can request a material or fabrication review without using the tool. The arithmetic illustrates a relationship; it does not accept a construction, certify a material, establish current pricing or replace a supplier process specification.
| Input | What to establish before using it |
|---|---|
| Review reference | Nonconfidential revision label. |
| Common routing length · inches | Same channel boundary and frequency for both candidates. |
| Candidate A complete loss · dB/in | From comparable measurement or simulation, not Df alone. |
| Candidate B complete loss · dB/in | Use same copper, line geometry assumptions and reference planes. |
| Candidate A quoted unit allowance | User-supplied currency value; no embedded price data. |
| Candidate B quoted unit allowance | Same quantity, scope and currency as A. |
| Currency or allowance unit | Label only; no currency conversion. |
Optional cost comparison from your own allowances
Use a quotation or a clearly labeled internal assumption for each input. Keep the quantity, construction and inspection scope the same when comparing alternatives. This uncalibrated planning model adds entered values; it contains no current market rates and does not issue a RAYPCB quotation. You can contact the team without completing it.
Optional project allowance comparison
Compare complete routing loss and commercial scope
The paired worksheet takes complete routing loss for two proposed constructions at the same frequency and common length. It then shows the loss difference alongside user-entered unit allowances. It does not derive a board price from a family label.
For an illustrative ten-inch route, changing the entered rate from 1.0 to 0.6 dB per inch saves 4 dB. This is arithmetic, not a measured MEGTRON 8 improvement. Use qualified model or coupon data for the actual decision and retain the copper assumptions.

Revisit the baseline honestly
The MEGTRON 7 channel guide provides the preceding decision boundary. If a validated MEGTRON 7 construction meets the complete requirement with appropriate margin, changing families may not be justified by the route alone.
Conversely, a failing baseline should not be rescued by comparing its worst copper and geometry with the candidate's best possible construction. Use consistent constraints, include manufacturing variation and identify the changes that are practical within the mechanical design.
Plan qualification before a purchase commitment
Define which measurements will establish the intended benefit. Coupon loss, impedance, dimensional inspection and assembly reliability answer different questions. The proposed evidence should represent the demanding features of the actual board, not only an easy test line.
Review material lead time and construction availability with the supplier. A public product introduction does not confirm present inventory, every thickness or an approved process at a particular fabrication site. Keep substitutions and required notifications explicit in the quotation.
Send a decision-ready inquiry
Provide the intended N or U route, layer count, dielectric intervals, copper, board size, quantity and electrical acceptance boundary. Include the baseline construction and the reason for considering a change. This lets the response address the actual constraint.
Use the downloadable worksheet as a discussion attachment if helpful. It stays on the visitor's device and is not automatically transferred to Contact. The desired outcome is an agreed, reviewable stackup and evidence plan rather than a generic recommendation to buy the highest-numbered material.
Tie the exact grade to an electrical construction
State the channel reference planes, frequency range, routing length, copper construction, transitions and interface assumptions together. A laminate loss-tangent value is one input to that system. It is not a complete insertion-loss measurement or a guarantee that a data rate will work.
Use comparable measurement or modeling conditions when screening alternatives. Material changes can require geometry changes to preserve impedance, and copper roughness can alter the result independently of the resin system. Keep the proposed stackup and the channel analysis synchronized through fabrication review.
For procurement, identify the properties that are fixed and the alternatives that can be evaluated. Request evidence at the relevant construction and frequency rather than a broad low-loss label. Compare total delivered scope and validation effort alongside material price. A shorter or better-routed channel may change the tradeoff more than replacing a material name alone.
A useful design-data record retains both the material value and the reason it was selected. State whether the value is supplier characterization, a construction-specific design input, a measured coupon extraction or an early assumption. These sources are not interchangeable. Keep frequency, method and specimen information visible when a comparison uses more than one document.
The tool on this page starts empty because a plausible default can otherwise be mistaken for a verified grade profile. Use the example to understand the units, then replace it with project inputs. A result with many decimal places does not imply that the material or routing-loss input is known to that precision.
For a high-speed design, plan how the model will be checked. Reference planes, coupon geometry, fixtures and the acceptance boundary determine what a measurement means. A coupon that characterizes one line construction does not automatically qualify every route or transition on the board.
Keep the commercial comparison aligned with the engineering one. Quantity, copper, layer structure, test deliverables and qualification effort should be comparable. A lower material allowance can be irrelevant if the proposed construction cannot meet the channel requirement, while a premium grade may be unnecessary if the actual route already has sufficient validated margin.
Standards, source context and limits
Use the edition, amendment and material-document revision named in the purchase agreement. A standards title, marketing label or supplier product family does not establish that a particular lot meets a requirement. Public summaries are useful for scope; the controlled specification and applicable test method govern acceptance.
The examples on this page are illustrative engineering scenarios. They are not RAYPCB production records or guaranteed material values. Source links identify the organizations responsible for the referenced information. Confirm applicability to the exact grade, construction and test condition before carrying a number into a drawing or qualification report. Sources were reviewed on 3 October 2026. A public catalog search is not proof that an unlisted product never existed. Where the exact designation or current technical sheet could not be verified, this page provides a clarification workflow rather than an invented material specification. Current supply, construction availability and qualification remain separate questions.
